Robin Hood in Cannes Festival

Bring it on, from giant waves, to volcanic ashes, to Festival scandals and to Ridley Scott’s injury, none could ever stop the movie Robin Hood from screening at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday, May 12, 2010.

Last week, giant waves had swept the Cannes’ beachfront boulevard as preparation for the Cannes Film Festival was in full throttle. And now volcanic ashes from Iceland are intimidating air flights to the French Riviera. Even Director Ridley Scott will miss his own epic screening for he underwent a knee operation and is required by doctors to rest because of his slow recovery. Cannes has been hit by controversy with Rachid Bouchareb’s tale of France’s colonial past in Algeria, Outside of the Law, provoking threats of protests. Italian Culture Minister Sandro Bondi is boycotting the festival over a documentary that mock Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s response of last year’s earthquake in central Italy.

But don’t worry Merry Fans, or should I say Merry Men of Robin Hood, none of those could stop launching the movie Robin Hood to stardom when it opens the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday. Producer Brian Grazer, Robin Hood itself – Russel Crowe, and Maid Marian – Cate Blanchett, and the rest of the cast will be there to represent the film. And for the scandals, however, it is very much part of festival life, Cannes will draw even more money and art out of those scandals.

The new Robin Hood movie promises a Gladiator (movie) style that touches a medieval setting. It will showcase an extreme makeover for Robin Hood (Crowe) who doesn’t wear tights and a less demure Maid Marian (Blanchett). Together they join to battle a new and dangerous dark force of King John as he led a French invasion of England.

Fifteen Nations with eighteen movies will be screened and compete for Cannes’ much coveted Palme d’Or (Golden Plam) Award. Even though Hollywood got a low profile on the Cannes Film Festival this year; it doesn’t mean that it will lack star power. Sean Penn, Naomi Watts, Josh Brolin and the whole cast of Robin Hood will be there gracing the red carpet.
