Is Shrek’s magic gone? Or maybe Shrek is just unlucky when it changes into a 3D Film where competitions for 3D movies are tough in today’s hi-tech generation. And even Wall Street has a bad news for Dream Works that their share price is going down in which Wall Street’s analyst downgraded Dream Works’ Shrek fourth installment. It has been predicting a disappointing film gross for the film which will premiere in theaters on Friday. Can it be saved by audience’s word of mouth that will come to see the movie?
The last time a Dream Works Animation film was saved by the audience’s word of mouth was the 3D fantasy film How to Train Your Dragon that was the first film to ever use the new logo of Dream Works Animation that was released last March 26, 2010, which have a disappointing premiere box office gross. It has topped the North American box office with an estimated $ 43.3 million but was a relatively low gross for a 3D film compared to another Dream Works Animation 3D film Monsters vs. Aliens. But the film has astonishingly benefited from it’s exceptionally fans’ word of mouth in which the film made a worldwide gross total of $ 429,247,696 as of May 2010. It’s a very rare luck for the film. As a result it has received positive reviews especially from the king of critics Rotten Tomatoes who gave the film an approval rating of 93% based on 27 reviews. Because of this late success of How to Train Your Dragon, Dream Works Animation formally decided that it will be made as a major media franchise for its company that includes a movie sequel set to be released in 2013, a TV series, online interactive simulation and a touring live show.
A ray of hope is still lingering the Shrek Forever After that will put Dream Works Animation in a win-win situation. Wall Street analysts predicts a domestic gross of $315 million and a global ticket sale of about $ 756 million that still make the Green Team look huge in box office hits but based on Wall Street it is still under-performance compared to its predecessors. The fourth Shrek installment is predicted to open under $100 million. It’s a kind of opening that is still spectacular for a 3D film but Dream Works Animation should better be ready in case a bad opening happens since the film has received mixed reviews from movie-goers. Shrek fans should hope that this Dream Work’s cornerstone franchise be a hit on its first week and be prepared to spread a word of mouth in case things failed.
